Happy Holidays from JayZ in Kzoo

Snow finally came to Kalamazoo in a wallop of a storm! Mother Nature blessed my birthday with a bLiZzArD, which meant sNoW dAy! It was wonderfully relaxing to have a pre-finals break from school. And now that there is snow here, it really feels like Christmas is on its way. I've been feeling more-than-usually crafty this holiday season. I'm kind of excited to show off my cute Christmas tree- an official white pine decorated with candy canes and gratitude. Also, my Christmas lights (thanks for the idea, Stace), snowflakes, and delicious gingerbread cutouts. I'm not trying to brag about my amazing talents at being domestic, but rather simply sharing my Christmas fun. What cool Christmas stuff have you been up to? Tell me all about it. :)

Any ideas of what to send Nathan in his Christmas package to inspire him to work hard for the last 100 days of his mission? I'm thinking some kind of "Endure to the End" theme. Scriptures? Presents? I'm taking all suggestions.

Last WMU jury... Over! Write a compositional comparison paper, a take-home final essay, and study for an Aaron Copland listening test- all for the same class, all due on Thursday. Then I'm flyin' west!

Yee Haw!

Will's Wisdom

A million thanks to Bekah Blackner.
She's one of my favorite people in the world,
And this is one of her favorite YouTube videos.
She recommended it to me,
and I'm recommending it to you.
It was exactly the inspiration I needed tonight
to get my unmotivated and lazy self
into the practice rooms
to make my dreams come true.
Pause the Christmas music and watch this video.
Tell me what ya think.

Counting and Such

It's December 2nd... which means that my best friend in the whole world will be done with his service to the Lord and people of San Antonio Texas in exactly 4 months. 120 days!!

And my mom reminded me yesterday that it's only 16 weeks. I'm considering making a paper chain countdown now. One link for every week left. It would be shorter than a countdown to Christmas chain. Oi!

Speaking of the countdown to Christmas... only 23 days on that chain. And then I get to actually TALK to Nathan on the phone. The blessed Christmas phone call. The last one until he's home.

I haven't actually heard his voice since May. And I haven't seen him since WAY before that. I think it's been 617 days, give or take a few. Good grief. That's too long!!

He's been talking a lot lately about being "ready for each other" when he gets home. Things that we need to be doing and thinking and becoming before we're back together again. I think this is a fantastic idea, and now is as good a time as ever to be gettin' ready. But *sigh*... I don't know. There's still so much to do! And so much to think about. And I don't want to rush anything or have things play out unnaturally. What I need to do is not stress.

Funny that I'm preparing for Nathan, AND my graduate recital in the same time frame. I might just have an anxiety attack.

No snow has stuck to the ground in Kalamazoo yet. It doesn't quite feel like December yet, with sunny days and blue skies over trees and grass that still resemble autumn. Really though, I'm not complaining. It took me a good 6 months to defrost from the bleak and numbing cold of last winter. Thank you global warming, the snow can wait.

I'm turning 24 next week. Ha. Life is funny. I don't know where I thought I'd be at 24 years old, but I don't think it was here. Not waiting for a missionary. Not in graduate school. Not in Michigan. But I'm happy where I am. And doing what I'm doing. And learning and experiencing all that my 24 years of life have thrown in my way. It's all part of the preparation for what ever comes next, right? I have a feeling that year 24 in the life of Jamilyn is going to be an exciting one. :)

I'm excited for Christmas this year! - Such a difference from last year. I've even been listening to cheesy Christmas radio stations a little bit already. I'm excited to decorate my little apartment for Christmas. I'm also looking forward to my first attempt at baking gingerbread cookies. I need to start formulating Christmas present ideas.

The end of this semester kind of snuck up on me!! Only two weeks left?? Really? There's still so much to do! So much to practice!! I know I say this a lot, but time is FLYIN'!

I'll be back in Utah in 15 days
Then back in Kzoo 8 days after that.
97 days later, Nathan flies home.
And 29 days after that, I'll be the proud Master Beckstrom of cello performance!

... then what?

Happy Birthday Gloria!!

My sweet little Gloria has now been a part of my life for an entire year!

Last year at this time, I was feeling rather lonely- living in a new state, at a new school, with no Nathan, no roommate, and few new friends. I was expressing my feelings about it in an email to Nathan, and his genius idea was "why don't you get a pet? Maybe a puppy... or a fish." I considered it for about a week. I even did some preliminary browsing around local pet stores. Then one fantastic Saturday, Brie and I went into PetSmart, and I saw the display of baby guinea pigs, and I knew...

We held about every baby guinea pig in the pen, and decided on little Miss Gloria, because of her little black soul, her cute little attitude, and her little white bangs.

We took her home in a little cardboard box, and she's been mine ever since. She did suffer from a little respiratory infection when she was new- so she got sent back to PetSmart veterinary services to recover.

Over the past year, I've learned a thing or two about my pig. She LOVES green peppers, apple cores, and blocks of alfalfa grass. She does not love oranges, bananas, or carrots that are less than fresh. When she gets freedom, she runs around the kitchen table at full speed. When I get home from school at night, she begs for her food by saying "weet weet!" She also "weets" anytime she hears cupboards opening- I think she associates it with the sound the cupboards make when she gets food. She purrs when I pet her and she likes to nestle up between my shoulder and my neck.

I admit that I am a total guinea pig nerd. But Gloria (nicknamed Glor, Zor, Lil' G, or Gloria in Excelsis Deo) has been one of my best Michigan friends... through a lot of tuff stuff. She silently listens as I tell her my thoughts about missing Nathan, the woes of waiting and dating, the stresses of graduate school, and pangs of occasional homesickness. Once or twice, she's even licked my hands as I've cried.

She makes me happy every day.
And on this day... similar to THIS DAY
(only stronger and deeper now)
I'm Thankful for Gloria.

Happy Birthday, Lil' G!!

Pumpkin Stuff

Here are pictures of Halloween Festivities 2009!

Early in October, I got excited about baking with pumpkin. I particularly enjoyed my first try at making a pumpkin roll. It was the most complex recipe I've ever attempted. There were so many details and steps. And lucky for me, Nick took pictures every step of the way. Here's how to make a perfect pumpkin roll:

First, mix all the ingredients for the dough, and for the cream cheese frosting:
While the cake is baking, sprinkle a dish towel with powdered sugar. This takes lots of concentration.
Immediately after taking it out of the oven, roll the cake in the powdered dish towel, and roll it up. While it cools, you could probably watch an old Office episode or two. :)

When the cake is sufficiently cooled, cover it in cream cheese frosting. YUM!
Don't forget to be excited about the pecans that are baked into the other side of the cake!
Then roll the whole thing up tight!
And stick it in the fridge to cool some more. Go watch some more Office.
Then it's time to eat it!! YUM. It was delicious!
A few days before Halloween, Nick and I went to the most amazing pumpkin patch in Kalamazoo. I've been looking forward to visiting Gene the Pumpkin Man since the summer!
This is Nick and me, looking among the millions for the perfect pumpkins.

And lucky us, we were there right as The Pumpkin Man himself was giving a tour of the patch to a group of young scouts. Of course, we tagged along. After the tour, we got a photo with Gene, and got him to tell us some more stories about himself and his farm. Old people are a whole lifetime worth of stories. I love it.
Nick and I filled our little orange wagon with our two favorite pumpkins, an acorn squash, a butternut squash, two mini gourds, two mini pumpkins, some home made honey, and a complimentary pumpkin recipe book. It was a plentiful harvest.

I'm excited to learn to like squash this year.
For Halloween, Friend Mike got us tickets to go to a fancy murder mystery night at the amazing Henderson Castle. I drive past this place all the time, and I've always wanted to be able to go inside and check it out, so it was a dream come true!

And it is as beautiful inside as I had hoped! Check out this stained glass window! The glass changes color throughout the day. We got a tour of the entire castle. Including the guest rooms, ball room, uncommon room, and the spa and hot tub on the roof!
The murder mystery dinner was really fun! But it required that we talk to all the other 50+ party guests to collect details on the murder plot. Sometimes I'm a little shy, so this made me get out of my comfort zone. My character was Monet Hasselhoff, and I was the founder of the budding artists home, and a distinguished painter. But I wasn't at all involved in the murder. That night, Mike and I stayed in the French room, decorated with all things French... including french paintings, an elaborate marble fireplace, a claw foot bathtub, a chain flush water closet, and heated marble floors. It was deluxe!
As mentioned a billion times, Mike and I are just friends. I feel like I need to attach a disclaimer here that nothing went on in the French Room that night that wasn't completely G rated. However, we did adopt FANTASTIC nick names from the murder mystery. Who wants to be Monet Hasselhoff or especially "Janie Lyn" (YIKES!) , when you could be Ms. Patty Cake and Mr. Jack Hammer? BANG BANG!
On Saturday night, I went to work. Which never really feels like much work at all. We went to pizza hut, and also browsed the local halloween store. And then after they went to bed, I watched an American's Next Top Model marathon on TV. :)

I didn't carve a jack-o-lantern, dress up as a Wild Thing, eat large amounts of candy, or hang out with my girls at the customary Halloween Party. But end of October festivities 2009, in my opinion, were a great success.

Holy smokes, it's November!!
Let the Holiday Season Begin!

PS- Elder Morris comes home in 150 days. :)

Sound Art

I'm the substitute teacher for Time Based Media again today.
I hope this professor gets better soon! I don't get paid enough to do this every day.

In the mean time, here is a fascinating interview clip of John Cage explaining how he hears the world. This is the kind of "time based media" I specialize in these days.

Happy- an Update from Art Class

Hi blog friends! Happy Monday afternoon. So, ya know how I am the graduate assistant in Time Based Media? Well, today the professor is sick, and she emailed me this morning to tell me that I will be the substitute teacher today. It's fine, because the students are working on their sound art projects. So I'm just here basically to monitor the computer lab, and answer any questions they may have on sound art... for the NEXT THREE HOURS!

Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a snickers. Except today I have a bag full of almonds, some fruit leather, and my Sigg jug with some water in it. I'm a happy camper. Let me tell you about my life. :)

It seems like a lot of my friends are unhappy these days. Come on guys, it's not even winter yet! How about if you ARE happy, leave a blog comment and tell me why, or what's doing it for ya. I could probably use some of that in my life.

**Not that I'm not happy. Cause I am. I just need to know that other people that I care about are happy too. That's all.**

Know what's making me happy? I went and saw the movie Where the Wild Things Are this weekend. It is definitely unique! I'm sure there are lots of people out there who don't like it, or don't understand it. But I really connected to it. I thought it was hilarious, and honest, and heart warming. I believe that I am a fellow wild thing. Does anyone know where I can get a full body wolf suit like unto Max?

The picture at the top of this blog is me showing my inner wild thing.

Also, if anyone wants to talk about the deeper symbols and meanings and character relationships in this movie, I'm completely into that. Call me. :)

I also recently watched The Shining - you know, the old school horror flick? Wow, definitely bizarre! But with upcoming Halloween, I was in quite the mood for it. Jack Nicholson is creepy enough by himself, then add a gigantic haunted and isolated hotel, a horrible murder story, and a kid with a mullet who can "shine!" Ha ha. Awesome. Can anyone explain the guy in the animal costume in room 327? If so, please enlighten me.

Also in the spirit of Halloween, Nick and I have been trying out pumpkin recipes. I like to call then pumpkin "funtivities." Pumpkin roll and pumpkin pancakes have been a success. Soon to come: Thai pumpkin soup, pumpkin chili, and healthy/hearty pumpkin bread. Yum. Isn't fall fantastic?

Also making fall fantastic has been the delightful Kal Haven trail. Who can say no to a brisk mid-morning walk on this beautiful "trail for all seasons?" The weather is crisp, but the sun, the sky, the leaves and the squirrels all warm my heart. I agree with Regina Spektor: "Leaves become most beautiful when they're about to die. When they're about to fall asleep, when they're about to dry... up!" I wish I had pictures to share from the vibrant Michigan woods, but you'll just have to take my word for it.

Cello is going well. My piano trio played Smetana in a masterclass with the Storioni Trio from the Netherlands last week. It was fantastic. And I'm using my practice tracker, and I made myself a learning schedule this morning. I'm just feeling very... on top of my cello life these days. And I think Uch is happy with me. That always makes my world a brighter place.

OK, I can't believe I've waited this long in the blog post to mention this, but I'm the new owner of a cute pink SNUGGIE! Friend Mike and friend Nick teamed up last night to get me a sweet gift. And I came home from work to discover this:
Mike and Nick had dressed up my cello case with warm weather clothing, featuring my new awesome snuggie. As ridiculous as the commercials are, snuggies really are quite wonderful. And partial proceeds from the pink one support the breast cancer foundation. It's one of my new favorite possessions. Ya'll know you're jealous.

Nathan is simply ON FIRE as a missionary, and I am exceedingly proud. Waiting is going well these days. And that feels really nice. Check out his blog. He writes fantastic letters!

These are all things that are making me happy. And Time Based Media class STILL isn't over.

XOXO,
James

Busy

It's October. Can you believe it?

Nathan is more than 75% done with his mission.

I burned half of his "18 months down" pants. Yippee!

I am giving an hour long presentation on "sound art" in Time-based Intermedia tomorrow. Yikes!

I'm fatter these days than I used to be.

I still love playing the cello.

And Waterstreet Cafe finally has Chai Cider again.

It's fall and I'm a happy girl.

*Jamilyn wonders to herself "Does life ever stop being so crazy busy? And if it did, would I be happy about it?"*

Life is going well for this busy midwest musician. I'm subbing for the South West Symphony this weekend, and practicing my little fingers raw. I suddenly REALLY MISS MY FAMILY! I probably won't be going home for Christmas. :( Does anyone know a nice, tidy person who needs a roommate ASAP? I seem to have lost mine...

REGINA!

Friend Nick and I went to the REGINA SPEKTOR concert Tuesday Night! Which was especially fun, because I didn't know we were going until Monday!

On my lengthy list of favorite music, Regina is probably on the very top. I can't even imagine counting how many times I've laughed, cried, and danced crazy around my room to Regina tunes.

"Some songs are so familiar that listening to them is like... being home."

So we drove to Ann Arbor to soak in some Regina at the awesome Michigan Theater. Sometimes I make weird faces. But I was excited.

This was the band that opened. I don't even remember what they are called, but they were fun. Look at the guy second in from the right. He looks like he's wearing disguise glasses with a big nose and mustache. But HE'S NOT. It's his real face. I think.

And then it was Regina. Did I mention we were sitting on the SECOND ROW? It was incredible. And she is incredible. The concert flew by so fast.

The only thing that was weird was that since there were seats, instead of General Admission open floor, people didn't stand up and dance ever. It's a different experience to enjoy your favorite music sitting politely instead of rockin' out. I just rocked out on the inside instead.

Man, I've missed concerts like this! It was fun to see Rudi, Jake, and Emily on the same row as us. And fun eating with them at Pizza House after.

I have to admit that it was a major "I miss Nathan" moment. After all, he did introduce me to the wonderfulness of Regina back in 2005. And we went to our first Regina concert together in 2007. And I can't listen to songs like "Samson" or "That Time" without thinking about him. I am, after all, his sweetest uprise. :)

So I bought him a concert t-shirt, and I'll wait for him to get home to tell him all of the amazing details of the concert, as to not make him trunky. And then we'll listen to her new album together, and probably all of her old albums too. Because I'm sure he misses her ...almost as much as he misses me.

"We counted up our feelings and divided them up evenly and called our calculation perfect love!"

But, Nick deserves a trophy for finding these tickets. And for putting up with me and all of my crazy mixed up MG emotions. And for being a good friend. A million thanks, pal!

Recently... in Kalamazoo

Little UPDATE!

First week of school... SO good to be back!
Orchestra Audition... Co- principal cellist.
Composers: Copland and Ives... Favorite class.
Graduate Assistant in... Time Based Media?
Black Current Scones... Delicious!
Lake Michigan September Sunset... Gorgeous!

I haven't gotten a letter from Nathan in over a month.  What do MGs do when their M stops writing?

Be patient
Be supportive
Keep an eternal perspective
Be grateful for what you've got
And for what they're doing

What else?

I've got Fall Goals on my mind.  They're coming soon.  And they're gonna be good.  The time has come (the walrus said) to start being who I really want to be.  This weeks inspirational speaker says "Think of the end result you want, then carefully plan the steps it takes to get there."

I want to be awesome.  So I'm planning.

"OH Let's get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France.  Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance.  Lets get rich and build a house on a mountain, making everybody look like ants.  From way up there, you and I!" -Ingrid Michaelson

Summer Goals Evaluation

Wow.  In the life of Jamilyn Beckstrom, I would say that this summer does not rank among the best I've ever had. But I guess I'll evaluate my goals anyway.  It's good for me.

  • 1.Provident Living.

I guess this went ok.  I'm getting better at only spending money on things I truly need, instead of silly wants.  And I took a provident living institute class, so I have more PL skillz now.  And I started a mini- food storage.  :)

2. Read a New Book Every Month.

I started out by reading The Secret Garden.  Then I read LIFETypes.  And Confessions of An Ugly Stepsister.  And Walden.  (Which also improved my knowledge and desire for provident living!).  Plus I listened to Harry Potter 6 and half of Harry Potter 7 on CD.

3. Matthew 5:48.

My secret goal with Elder Morris.  FAILURE!  But I have increased desire to start again and do better.

4. Journal, Scriptures, Pray.

Hit and miss.  Jeez, when am I going to make this a priority?

5. Bike More than Drive.

Well, maybe not MORE, but I did bike a lot.  And I love it.

6. Run.

Also FAILURE.  When I was restricted to glasses all summer long, I got discouraged about running, and simply didn't do it.  But my contacts came now, so I'm excited to start again.

7. Wake Up by 8 am.

This went pretty well.  I just love being up and around when the world is still quiet.  Now, if I can just consistently make myself go to bed at a reasonable hour every night, this goal will go better!

It's FALL!  Can ya feel it?  School FINALLY starts Tuesday.  And new FALL goals to come.

Jamilyn and Michael Go to Mackinac

Yesterday, my good friend (let me emphasize friend here, k?) Michael Weston and I hit the open road and spontaneously headed to Mackinac Island.  Look at the Michigan map.  Find Kalamazoo in the bottom left-ish corner.  Then go to the very top of the mitten, and find Mackinac Island.  It was the most fun I've had on a Wednesday in a long time!

Michael was our fast, yet safe, driver in his Mercury Hybrid SUV.  Here he is looking fierce in my sunglasses, somewhere mid-Michigan.  We listened to plenty of Springsteen, TuPac, and Highway Country Radio.  We can talk and not talk for hours!

To get from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan to Mackinac Island, you have to take a ferry, because there are no cars allowed on the island.  We crossed beautiful Lake Huron in the early afternoon on this, our little ferry.

This is Michael on the ferry with the harbor in the background.  He assured me that he is a natural seaman.  It was a beautiful day!  Nothing but blue skies and high 60s.  The ferry ride was fantastic!  We had an awesome view of the mackinaw bridge and all the beauty that surrounds it.  I was really excited to get to the island.

And then we DID get to the island.  And everything was so expensive!  We didn't pay $10.50 each to visit Fort Mackinac, but instead, we walked around up behind it.  We found Skull Cave, Fort Holmes, and don't even forget Sugar Loaf rock formation!  We made it a goal to read every touristy information sign we could find.  As we were walking around, I couldn't help but love how beautiful the trees were.  The light and the shadows and the leaves were breath taking.  This picture doesn't do it justice.

After we were done walking around the Mackinac forest we were REALLY tired, so we went down to the shore of Lake Huron to rest.  I'd never been to Lake Huron before.  And here is the classic 'feet in the lake' picture.  It was exactly the kind of refreshment I needed.

These are the lovely waves of Lake Huron with the lighthouse in the background.  We spent some time throwing rocks into the lake.  Mike almost accidentally threw a rock at my head.

Then we tried to go to scope out the Grand Hotel... the largest Summer hotel in the United States with the longest wrap around porch.  It's spectacular.  And $600 a night!  In true Mackinac fashion, you have to pay $10 just to walk around the grounds.  A stuffy lady with a foreign accent wouldn't let us walk much closer to the hotel than this.  But don't worry, we snuck around through the back gardens.  We got to observe the obscenely rich swimming and playing croquet on the front lawn.  We're so deviant.

Then we fulfilled one of my life long desires.  I've always wanted to ride a tandem bicycle. We rented one, and rode it around the perimeter of the island.  Mike thought it would be lame, but it was actually amazingly fun and beautifully relaxing.  It was a good team building experience for our friendship.  :)  We finished the route in record breaking time, and had the bike back to the shop before our hour was up.

After that, we just spent some time checking out the tourist shops. I was trying to find a shirt that said "I biked Mackinac TANDEM" and Mike wanted a shirt that mentioned fudge packing.  We didn't find a shirt for either of us.  We did buy some fudge.  Lots of fudge.  And the unanimous favorite flavor of Jamilyn and Mike is Chocolate Cherry Walnut.  YUM.  Then it was time to catch the ferry and head home.  It was much colder and windier in the evening, but still fun.  It was beautiful to watch the sun setting over the water.

Before we left Mackinac completely, we drove over the 5k suspension bridge connecting the Lower and Upper peninsulas.  THAT was amazing, and beautiful.  Did I mention that I forgot a memory card for my camera?  So I could only take as many pictures as would fit into the internal memory?  And by the time we were on the bridge, the memory was all filled up.  So there is no picture evidence of this magnificent experience.  But now I can officially say that I've been to the U.P.  We drove around St. Ignace for a while, and then headed back down south.

On the way home, we stopped at Burger King for vegetarian ANGRY WHOPPERS and fries with Ranch sauce.  These are our ANGRY faces.  After Burger King, it was all down hill.  We were both exhausted, and still had a long way to drive.  I'm not sure what we talked about for the last two hours of the trip.  I'm pretty sure I was asleep for most of it.  Somehow Mike got us home.

But WOW what a fun day.  And fun memories.  Thanks, Mike, for the last HOORAH of Summer 2009!
